He faces a dilemma in which he can either flee to Canada and evade the war, or accept his draft notice and go to war. WebElroy is his guide through this time of confusion and him leading O'Brien to the Rainy River forces him to determine his fate and where he will go from there. Symbols/Theme: A symbol in this chapter is love. Not the actual feeling of love, but just the word itself. Jimmy Cross is skeptical of the word love, but he uses it as a symbol of hope.
